I'm painting again, and it feels so good! My self-imposed hiatus of almost 5 months ended about a week ago when I cracked open my pastels for the first time. A couple quick cloud studies and I was on my way. Funny thing, painting. Like many skills that you lose if you don't use. Despite some really great reference photos -- so many beautiful sunsets this summer! -- I was a bit in over my head trying to paint skies and clouds. I decided to regroup and paint something else that I know I know. MacGregor, again. My furry muse. He's turning into an old man of a dog and I know my time with him is limited. I really enjoyed this piece. It came together so nicely and was such a great reminder of how to lay down color and let it work with neighboring colors. I was overworking the sky studies, over- manipulating the pastel. I needed to remember how to just let the pastel marks do the work themselves, without my meddling. Mission accomplished! |
